When you take a step in a thrift store it’s like taking a step into the 70s and 80s. There are racks and racks of clothing ranging from ripped jeans and oversized t-shirts to puffy dresses and plaid skirts, a display of shoes that were once in style, and vintage hats and flower handbags all scattered throughout the store. To successfully thrift you must sift through everything until you find the item that completes you. What millennials are wearing today is very similar to what people wore in the past including flower crowns, high waisted jeans, and bell bottoms. The trend for retro clothing has made people begin to go thrifting to obtain these “in” styles.
Many stores are open where you can give clothing and buy clothing. Some of the stores include Uptown Cheapskate, Platos Closet, and Goodwill.
People should shop at these places because, “I shop thrift myself to find deep discounts but the selection is really worn out and you have to hunt for the few treasures. Shopping at UPTOWN CHEAPSKATE is much better because the selection is huge, varied, current and stylish. And, the discount you receive buying used is significant. Much of what we sell is 60-70% less than than it was brand new at the mall,” Todd Frick owner of Uptown Cheapskate located at 8223 S Quebec St Centennial, CO 80112
It would make sense for parents to buy their childrens clothing from a thrift store because kids grow out of clothing constantly. It saves money to buy and sell clothing used, but teenagers are now shopping at these thrift stores. More teens and adults are thrifting because they are financially aware of the economy and want to have money for other things.
“I think thrifting is good because it is affordable, and if you know where to look you can find some nice things. It’s much cheaper...and it’s good for the environment to reuse,” says senior Emma Ingram.
A new trend is wearing vintage clothing. Adults have donated their old clothing to thrift stores in hope someone else can wear them or to get rid of unneeded items. This gives the younger millennials a chance to be in style with wearing vintage clothing that is actually vintage not just made to look like clothes from the 80s. The new clothing style is a main reason teens and others shop at thrift store.
Other people choose not to go thrifting for various reasons. People like to wear their own clothing that has not been worn before or they just choose to buy new clothing.
Junior Mason Ferris says, “I don’t go thrifting because I don’t care what people wear. I don’t think my style fits it but others can fit the style.”
Even though people may not go thrifting they do not judge people or care if people go thrifting. It is not looked down upon, infact most people don’t notice if someone bought their clothing from a thrift shop. Thrifting is a trend because it is a way people express themselves.
