Straight Outta Compton is the story about the rise and fall of the rap group N.W.A. and the challenges they faced while speaking their personal truths and dealing with the consequences.
The film does a successful job of showing how their difficult lives were expressed it through their music.
The group consisted of four members, O'Shea "Ice Cube" Jackson, Andre "Dr. Dre" Young, Eric "Eazy-E" Wright, DJ Yella, and MC Ren who grew up in Compton, California.
It’s worth watching this film, because these themes are still as relevant today as they were 27 years ago. For instance, police brutality is featured in the film, as group members are constantly getting in trouble with the police for no reason. In one scene, the group is standing outside of their recording studio when the police show up. The officers throw them to the ground and search them because they looked like “gang bangers.”
The movie also shows how N.W.A's manager, Jerry Heller, caused N.W.A. to break up. Heller favored Eazy-E and signed him to a contract. No other member was given a contract. This caused a fallout between Ice Cube and eventually Dr. Dre. After they left Ice Cube became a movie actor and Dr. Dre created the company Beats. Dr. Dre recently sold Beats for $3billion.
The dialogue was very powerful and not just in the songs. Some of the most memorable quotes from the movie came from Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.). In one scene he says, “Our art is a reflection of our reality,” meaning their music was describing how their life was in Compton. In another scene, he says “You speak a little truth and people lose their minds.” He said this because when their album “Straight Outta Compton” was released people hated them for the language and themes they used in their music.
The acting was fantastic. O'Shea Jackson Jr. nails the role playing his dad. Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre) and Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E) also hit home on their parts.
Showing each member's evolution is another thing this movie does well. Straight Outta Compton makes you love a character for one hour of the movie and hate them for the next.
This movie has grossed over $180 million worldwide so far and is steadily growing. Straight Outta Compton is an overall excellent movie, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes rap, hip-hop, or just wants to see a good movie. Rated: R Grade: 9/10
