Story by: Caleb Garcia and Elijah Rodriguez
ThunderRidge golf is known for its storied past. The Grizzlies were the most dominant program in the state dating from 2001 to 2007, winning six straight state titles led by Derek Tolan and Ryan Husted. This year’s team looks to get back to the winning tradition that ThunderRidge is used to.
Evan Kalac, the only freshman on varsity, shot an even par at Regionals to be the single Grizzly advancing to the 2015 5A State Championship tournament in Fort Collins. Seniors Phil Ferguson, Chase Noell and Hunter Snauwaert shot a 90, 86 and 81, respectively during Regionals.
“I feel like I have improved greatly, and having fun is the best part about golf,” said Noell, co-captain of the golf team.
There is no clear cut on who will be the one to take the crown and recognition as state champs, but ThunderRidge’s Kalac has a good shot at the title. The Grizzlies finished 9th in state last season and look to improve this year.
As the lone grizzly to advance to state, Kalac felt the pressure playing in his first State Championship. He shot 20-over, which placed him tied for 56th out of 84. “I didn't feel much pressure until I got there and realized that I was playing and representing my school," said Kalac.
The Grizzlies golf team has a bright future with the help of freshmen prodigy Evan Kalac. He stated, “I expect to definitely improve and hopefully win a state title for ThunderRidge.”
