Story by Caleb Garcia
As the Grizzlies wrestling season kicks off this winter, the players on the team are ready to keep a winning tradition for the wrestling program going. Last year was a great example of this tradition; ThunderRidge had the highest number of wrestlers advance to state.
One wrestler in particular has caught everyone’s eye, showing outstanding athletic ability in every sport he participates. Alex Bezugly is expected to have a chance at winning a ThunderRidge wrestling title this year. The senior, who wrestles at 145 pounds, has advanced to state both his sophomore and junior years, which gives him a leg up on the competition.
“Alex is very committed during the season and has improved through his relentless work ethic during our training sessions. His biggest obstacle is finding the time to be fully committed to his training,” said Head WrestlingCoach Casey Paul.
Junior Stats: Lost 3-1 both times to senior wrestlers during state, but has a great chance of winning the title this year due to his outstanding athletic ability and experience.
Expectations for the season: “My expectations are to get to the state tournament, and hopefully place.” This is his last year to show what he is made of, so his expectations are high.
Experience: Bezugly has been wrestling for six years, which gives him an advantage because he started wrestling before high school, many other wrestlers do not.
Rival: “I’m really looking forward to wrestling Ponderosa. They have never lost a league championship, and I truly believe that our team can break that streak this year.”
